HEAD of rugby Alan Hancock is looking to turn Marston Ferry Road into a fortress after Oxford Harlequins recorded back-to-back home wins in South West 1 East.

A thrilling 27-26 victory over local rivals Witney on Saturday ensured Harlequins picked up their second victory of the season – both of which have come at home.

Quins will have to wait until November 7 for their next fixture at Marston Ferry Road, when they welcome Towcestrians, but Hancock is urging his side to build a run of form on their own turf.

“We want to keep this home record going,” he said.

“It is a good thing.

“We’re happy with the win (against Witney) but we have got areas we want to build on – inconsistency and discipline did not help us.

“If we can erase those errors then I think we will enjoy the rest of the season.”

Sam Watkinson made a particular impression at the weekend, scoring 17 points, and Hancock was quick to praise the fly half.

He said: “He is just a very intelligent player, he plays what he sees.

“Sam does all the basics right and orchestrates the back line.

“He has that go forward as well and then the option with his kicking for goal and territory is a big positive.”
