A TRY by winger Pete McKinley from the last play earned Wallingford a 29-29 draw away to 14-man Bicester in Southern Counties North.

Bicester were a man short after half an hour when No 8 Dan Spencer was red-carded for a retaliatory punch on Wallingford’s Gavin Harmer following a high tackle.

Harmer was shown a yellow card.

At the time, Wallingford were leading 17-10.

Bicester had led 10-3 thanks to an early forwards try from skipper Matt Dye, converted by Tom Miles, who added a penalty. Phil Dawes kicked a penalty for the visitors.

Wallingford scored tries through Tom Swainston and centre Ralph Smith, with Dawes adding two conversions.

Bicester drew level when fly half Dave Hampton scored a try, converted by Miles.

In a scrappy second half, Bicester landed two penalties to go 23-17 ahead, but Wallingford replied with a converted try from Finn Sayce.

Two more penalties from Miles gave Bicester a five-point lead.

Grove suffered a 23-18 defeat at Trowbridge in South West 1 East, after conceding a late score.

After the hosts landed two early penalties, Grove dominated the first half, taking a 15-6 interval lead thanks to tries from winger Guy Nicholl and scrum half Joe Chilvers. Fly half Mike Martin converted both and added a penalty.

After the break, Trowbridge’s Gareth Davis and Martin swapped penalties.

Grove conceded tries to flanker Matt Howard and hooker Dave Martin, with Davis converting both.

They looked like hanging on, but after the sin-binning of flanker Ryan Biscoe, McKinley scored in the corner, the conversion falling short.

Abingdon made it five wins out of five in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier Division with a 12-10 success at Crowthorne to stay joint top. Four penalty goals from Chris Stable saw Abingdon home.

Didcot suffered their first defeat in the BB&O Championship when going down 28-27 at Faringdon, who won with a last-minute penalty.

The visitors led 27-8, with tries from Charlie Ellis, Chris Freeman, Alex Cleminson and skipper Ronnie Booth.

Freeman added two conversions and a penalty.

In worsening conditions, Faringdon closed the gap before snatching a late victory.

Unbeaten Harwell overcame Oxford 59-7. Harwell led 32-7 at half-time, with two tries each for Andy Lee and Gavin Wilde and one for Ollie Wright. Mike Phillips kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Further tries by Dave Paton, Andy Blease, Tom Nicholas, Ollie Wright and Dan Corne completed the win.
