WALLINGFORD’S game at home to Bicester in the Southern Counties North on Saturday had to be abandoned due to a serious injury.

The visitors were leading 26-14 with nine minutes to go when their replacement flanker Joey Sibun collapsed with a neck injury.

He was taken to hospital but, happily, tests revealed no fracture.

Both teams were awaiting the verdict from the league as to whether the results stands or they will have to replay the fixture.

Dave Hampton crossed to give Bicester an early lead, Tom Miles converting.

Miles added a penalty, but Wallingford replied with a try from scrum half Phil Dawes, which he also converted Two penalties from Miles stretched Bicester’s lead to 16-7 at half-time, and he added another just after the interval.

Mike Harris then jinked over for a try which Miles converted to make it 26-7.

Props Alex Macdonald of Bicester and Antony Marris of Wallingford, followed by flanker Francois Wiese of Bicester, were then sin-binned.

And as Sibun lay injured on the ground, excellent counter-attacking by the hosts ended with inside centre Pete McKinley racing down the middle of the pitch to the posts for a try which Phil Dawes again converted.

It was then that the game was halted, and eventually abandoned, because of the seriousness of Sibun’s injury.

Meanwhile, Grove moved away from the foot of the South West 1 East table with a 17-13 victory over Trowbridge.

The win sees them move to within a point of their rivals.

In the BB&O Championship, Didcot claimed bragging rights with an 8-5 derby win over Harwell.

Josh Witts kicked a penalty before Matt Collings went over for a try to put the hosts 8-0 ahead at half-time.

Jordan Morrison set up a nervous final ten minutes when he crossed for Harwell.
