CHINNOR kept their side of the bargain to make a late bid for the play-offs but were forced to settle for third in National League 2 South.

A 33-22 victory at London Irish Wild Geese secured the much-needed four-try bonus point, but Old Elthamians made sure of second, due to winning more games, when beating Barnstaple 68-21.

Nonetheless, Chinnor finished on a high to secure the club’s best finish.

They made a dream start when Alex Bradley went over in the first minute. Basil Strang converted.

It was 12-0 on nine minutes as Bevon Armitage was driven over for an unconverted try.

The home side clawed their way back into the game and levelled on 25 minutes.

Karl Gibson and Matt Killeen crossed, with Ben Kitching converting the latter.

Chinnor retook the lead just before half-time when Ali Bone scored out wide.

Strang converted to make it 19-12.

The four-try bonus point was secured five minutes after the break as Ben Manning crossed.

A driving maul then put Henry Lamont over, with Strang converting both scores to make it 33-12 after 60 minutes.

Irish fought back and made the most of Chinnor’s Tom Burns being in the sin-bin when Gibson crossed for an unconverted try.

The visitors were reduced to 13 as Ben Pienaar was also yellow carded, before Moore forced his way over for Wild Geese.

Henley Hawks finished their campaign with a 32-26 win at home to Redruth.

The hosts started brightly when Tom Parton went over in the first minute and Liam O’Neill converted.

Joe Butler’s penalty made it 10-0, before David Hyde broke through to score on 29 minutes.

Butler added the extras, before kicking another penalty for a 20-point lead.

Henley’s Jake Albon was sin-binned and Roger Rule’s converted try saw Redruth get off the mark at the end of the half.

After the break, Parton scythed through a gap to score. Butler converted to make it 27-7.

But Redruth began using their driving maul to good effect, leading to a penalty try as well as Palepoi Nonu touching down. Rule converted the first to cut the deficit to eight points.

However, Hawks all but secured victory on 68 minutes when Alan Awcock ran in from 40 metres.

Henley had Albon red-carded and Redruth’s Richard Brown scored. Rule converted, but the hosts held out for victory.
