RUGBY: Wallingford get a belting

Wallingford ended their season with a 45-12 defeat at Reading, which secured their hosts a play-off spot in South West 2 East.

Powerful No 8 Scott Heirene scored twice for Reading in the opening 20 minutes, with fly half Rob Sweeney converting both.

Wing Ralph Smith went close for Wallingford, but Reading scored again through wing Alex Dorliac.

Richard Turner touched down from Henry Venners’s grubber kick to put Wallingford on the board.

A try from Sweeney, who added three more conversions, sealed it, then Wallingford had hooker Tom Hill sin-binned.

Scores from Sean Lynch (2) and Andy Grierson put Reading 45-5 clear.

Wallingford rallied after Reading’s Dan Phillips was red-carded for a late tackle on fly half Jackson Sayce.

Smith scored a second try, with Sayce converting.

Harwell lost 42-19 at home to Gosford All Blacks, leaving them bottom of the BB&O Premier Division and facing possible relegation.

That looks unlikely with Wheatley having already scratched, but Harwell’s fate will depend on restructuring in other leagues.

Harwell’s pack set up a try Carl Blewett try under the posts, which Dave Beaven converted.

Trailing 15-7 at the break, Harwell conceded a bucketful of points before the forwards set up Harwell tries for Kev Wood and Ryan Hodnett, with Beaven converting.

Before the match there was a minute’s silence for former Harwell prop Jim Douglas, who died suddenly that morning.
