Didcot weightlifter Ben Watson is in the running for a top honour at the 2013 Oxfordshire Sports Awards.

The St Birinus Club member has been shortlisted for the sportsman of the year honour.

The awards, which take place at Oxford's Kassam Stadium on November 29, are run by the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership with the Herald’s sister paper, the Oxford Mail as official media partners.

They showcase the best of the county’'s sporting talent.

Watson this year broke the British record in the clean and jerk and also competed for his country in the European Under 23 Championships.

He will be joined on the night by four other local nominees.

Abingdon’s Fiona Bunn is nominated for the junior sportsperson of the year after winning gold at the World Schools Orienteering Championships.

Wallingford Netball Club are in the final three for the club of the year.

While two juniors go head-to-head in the young volunteer category, with Katy Spiers, who attends King Alfred’s Academy, and Abingdon’s Tom Leonard both in the running.

A total of 21 different sports feature in the 30-strong list of potential winners.
