Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Coneygree could attempt to emulate Denman by carrying top weight to victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury in November.

While the eight-year-old, trained by Mark Bradstock at Letcombe Bassett, near Wantage, won’t run again this season, Grade 1 contests like the Betfair Chase at Haydock and the King George VI Chase at Kempton may be on the agenda.

However, Bradstock and his wife, Sara, would love to see him held in the same esteem as Paul Nicholls’ former chaser.

“Our dream is that he’s another Denman,” said Sara.

“We might consider the Betfair Chase and the King George for sure, but possibly we will try to win the Hennessy off top weight.

“Looking to the Gold Cup 12 months’ hence, I imagine Don Poli and Vautour might try to beat us, but they’re are going to have to go a bit.”

Coneygree was continuing a rich tradition at the Old Manor Stables as they were formerly the home to the legendary Golden Miller, who won five Gold Cups from 1932-36.

The Bradstocks’ star was bred by Sara’s late father, Lord Oaksey, after they bought the mare Plaid Maid for £3,000 to provide him with an interest in later life.

With Djakadam and Road To Riches chasing Coneygree up the hill for big-spending owners Rich Ricci and Gigginstown Stud, it was a real David and Goliath success for the Bradstocks’ tiny ten-horse operation.

“You don’t have to pay telephone numbers,” added Sara. “It does mean that fairytales can come true.

“She (Plaid Maid) is a miracle isn’t she, and dad would have been so proud.”
