Eddie Pepperell moved up to a new career-high ranking of 80 in the world after a strong finish at the KLM Open on Sunday.

The 24-year-old from Abingdon carded a six-under-par final round 64 to finish in a share of fifth place at Kennemer in the Netherlands, three shots behind winner Thomas Pieters.

A run of four birdies in five holes propelled Pepperell into contention and he came close to a hole-in-one at the 15th, when his tee shot hit the flag.

It was part of five successive pars to finish the round, which meant he finished three shots behind winner Thomas Pieters.

Nonetheless, it rounded off an excellent week of four rounds in the 60s, claiming the third top-five finish of the season.

The £51,000 prize money moved the Frilford Heath golfer to 31st in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and up eight places to a new highest world ranking.

It should have done enough to cement Pepperell’s place in the restricted fields at the high-profile Final Series events, culminating at the World Tour Championship in Dubai this November.

He returns to action tomorrow, for the Italian Open in Milan.
