DIDCOT super-middleweight Gavin Lissenden believes the best is yet to come after claiming his first major title.

Competing for the Queensbury League’s regional title in front of a packed audience at Effingham Park in Sussex, the 33-year-old machine operator produced a sensational performance to outpoint old rival Jason Chay.

The pair had fought a disputed draw in October with both men claiming they had done enough to take the win.

But there was no mistaking the result this time as the Oxfordshire pugilist overwhelmed his Kent opponent.

Having dominated the early stages, Lissenden tired in the last round. And he found himself under pressure from his resolute opponent.

“I got cut and I was really blowing but it was all worth it,” he said.

Lissenden, who trains out of the South Moreton Boxing Club with fellow Queensbury champion Terry Russell, believes his win has made all the sacrifices worthwhile.

“Because of my shifts I have to fit my training around them and I often have to do a lot of my own fitness work.

“My trainer John Houston has been a great help.”

Having competed just three times in 13 years, Lissenden now wants to make up for lost time.

“I just want to win more titles and have fun,” he said.
