GOLF: THE new captains at Drayton Park, near Abingdon, brought back memories of the silent cinema age when they dressed up as the Laurel and Hardy comedy duo for their drives into office.

Men’s captain David Hole added to the merriment of the occasion by hooking his drive out of bounds, to hoots of laughter.

However, Pat Hale, the new ladies’ captain played it down the middle.

The captains are pictured in their costumes.

Their elected charities are Diabetes UK and Cystic Fibrosis for which they are hosting a charity golf day at the club on Friday, May 20.

TABLE TENNIS: MARLBOROUGH B did their C team a big favour in the race for the Didcot & District League Division 1 title.

Despite Karl Bushell’s maximum for leaders RAL A, they went down 6-4 to Marlborough B.

Second-placed Marlborough C took full advantage, closing the gap thanks to a 9-1 win over Moreton A thanks to maximums from Ray Powell and Sam Ricks.

In the all-Upton duel at the bottom, the A-string came out on top 6-4, with Dave Hudson claiming a maximum.

This will probably not change the order at the foot of the table though. RAL B also managed a narrow 6-4 win over Drayton A with Eamon Deeley picking up a maximum for RAL, perhaps a surprise given Mathew Davies form this season.

In Division 2, Stuart Pringle starred as Abingdon A consolidated their position at the top with a 7-3 win against Marlborough D.

This was helped by their two nearest rivals Sutton B and Marlborough E fighting out a hard fought draw.

Sutton A probably eased their relegation worries with an 8-2 win over Drayton C thanks to a maximum from Chris Noys.

This may have condemned Drayton to one of the relegation places though. Denise Wellers maximum for Moreton B against Drayton B helped them to a 6-4 win over Drayton despite only having two players.

In division 3 Chris Haskers maximum helped Wallingford A return to form with an 8-2 win over Grove A and confirm them as division winners.

A maximum from Richard Giblin for Drayton D against Sutton C helped them to a 6 – 4 win which will probably give them second spot over Abingdon B, despite the latter’s 8-2 win over Letcombe B.

Elsewhere in the division Marlborough F thumped RAL E 10-0 which will confirm the latter’s relegation.

In division 4 second placed Abingdon B’s close fought draw with Marlborough G means they cannot catch Wallingford B for the division crown and will have to be content with second. Marlborough H had a fine week with two wins.

The first against Moreton D thanks to a maximum from Pete Sinclair 6-4 and the second 7-3 against Drayton C thanks to a maximum from Lucy Johnson.

Unfortunately they are just a little too far behind Abingdon to catch them for second.

Hanney A won 7-3 against Letcombe C thanks to a maximum from Bertie Anstis which condemns Letcome to bottom of division 4, although with two games in hand they could still pull themselves out of the relegation zone.

In division 5 Moreton E managed a 5-5 draw with Drayton G thanks to a maximum from Yani Zahrir despite only having two players.

Drayton F should still win the division despite losing 8-2 to Sandford for whom both Jason Henry and Monica Graham got maximums.
