WALLINGFORD and Abingdon clubs enjoyed a successful time at the 175th Oxford City Royal Regatta, writes John Wiggins.

The experienced Wallingford duo of Pete King and Mike Edge were imperious in the Masters C/D double sculls – first over Abingdon’s Paul Godsafe and Dave Reeves and then against City of Oxford in the final.

Their clubmates Leigh-Ann Bard and Jen Collum battled through the high wind and occasional downpours to win their heat, semi-final and ultimately the final against Falcon RCt in the IM2 double sculls.

On Sunday, Bard was replaced by Tori Bellamy in the double.

A bye to the final saw them up against the other Wallingford entry, but they were no match for them, and Collum took her second title.

The club’s other Sunday finalist was Hannah Wilkinson in the WJ15 single.

Meanwhile, Abingdon celebrated victories for young and old.

After their defeat by Wallingford, Godsafe and Reeves reached Sunday’s final only to lose to St Edward’s Martyrs. Separately, they fared better with Godsafe winning the Masters D singles on Saturday over 1000m, and Reeves winning the Masters B event over 500m on Sunday.

Abingdon’s Ross Fergus was another victor in singles in Sunday’s IM3 event, while Jamie Sudlow won the J18 singles and Amy Ware and Leonie Watson were the dominant double in an all-Abingdon J14 final.

l Wallingford’s Ellie Piggot and Brianna Stubbs contest a straight final in the quad at this week’s World Championships.
