EDDIE Pepperell believes the longer format in the final stage of the European Tour’s Qualifying School will be an advantage as he attempts to win back his card for 2017, writes David Prichard.

The Abingdon professional just missed out on retaining his guaranteed place on the elite circuit after experiencing a slump in form since the summer.

It means that instead of preparing for the lucrative season climax in Dubai, Pepperell, 25, will this week fly to Spain.

He is among a 156-strong field who on Saturday will begin battling for one of 25 Tour cards for next season on offer at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona.

But the Frilford Heath member reckons the format and location are a boost to his chances.

He said: “It’s a better event for me because it’s six rounds and you have to play four rounds to make the cut.

“I feel historically I’ve been a slow starter, so this gives me the perfect opportunity to get into a rhythm.

“I know if I’m playing well the six-round format will be great for me.

“Girona hosted the Spanish Open a couple of years ago, where I was one off the lead after two rounds (going on to finish joint 24th).

“I know the course and I’m pretty confident. It will be a good experience.”
