EDDIE Pepperell was delighted to successfully come through qualifying school and regain his European Tour card, but hopes it is a one-off, writes David Pritchard.

The Abingdon golfer was under par for all six rounds at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona, Spain, one of only two to do so in the 156-strong field.

The 25-year-old started the sixth and final round at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain joint third.

And a one-under-par total of 71 saw him keep his place with a share of fifth.

Pepperell opened with five pars in the final round, before shooting three birdies and a bogey in the next four holes.

Seven more pars followed, and although a bogey five at the 17th saw him drop a position, he finished with another par to ensure another fine round.

Pepperell, who had to take part due to a slum in form in the middle of this year, took great satisfaction from the result, although he would be happy not to return for the rest of his career.

He said: “I played two practice rounds beforehand as well, so it was eight consecutive days.

“I have never done anything like it. It really is a marathon.

“The way I played I was always going to make my card, it was all about staying patient.

“The question was how well I putted, which would determine whether I won or not.

“It was an interesting experience and if you go through it counts for so much.

“I hope I never go again, but if I did I feel I would know what it’s about.”

The Frilford Heath member’s will use his new card for the first time next week, at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Leopard Creek, South Africa.
