DAVID Murphy sent records tumbling at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin, Texas.

The rising former pupil of King Alfred’s Academy, Wantage, who is shortlisted for young sportsperson of the year at Friday’s Oxfordshire Sports Awards, was part of a 12-strong Great Britain team.

Murphy, who is a member of City of Oxford, posted a personal best in the 100m breaststroke, with his time of 1min 1.65secs, to finish fifth in the A final.

It was also good enough to break the open Oxford and North Bucks county record and South East Region record, previously held by his brother Alex.

The event was part of the Target Tokyo Programme, designed for young swimmers to gain international experience in preparation for the next Olympic Games.

In 2016, Murphy was double British champion and also won a silver and two bronze medals for England in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Competing against Murphy for the junior sportsperson of the year at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium will be another King Alfred’s product gymnast Ben Goodall, as well as England junior hockey player Miriam Pritchard.

Goodall was selected by Great Britain and came fifth in the world tumbling championships in Denmark.

Abingdon Gymnastics are in the final three for the club of year award, having been shortlisted for the same category 12 months ago.

Wantage C of E School will bid to land the sporting primary honour, where they face Whitchurch and Larkrise (Oxford).
