WILLIAMS endured a difficult Chinese Grand Prix as they came away from the Shanghai International Circuit empty-handed.

Hopes were high for the Grove-based Formula 1 team after Felipe Massa qualified sixth fastest and rookie teammate Lance Stroll was tenth.

But Stroll’s race was ended on the first lap after he was struck by Sergio Perez, while the virtual safety car period which followed meant Massa’s early switch to dry tyres backfired.

The Brazilian said: “We had five slow laps on the dry tyres, so they were completely cold.

“I wasn’t able to drive in the proper way because it felt like I was driving on ice.

“That was the worst part; we lost so much time and so many positions.”

Stroll said: “I was in front, knew the corner was mine and had to turn in eventually. It was just unfortunate as that was my race over.

“I got hit and then the car was broken, most likely with a puncture and damaged suspension.”

Williams have an opportunity to bounce back immediately this weekend, when the season continues in Bahrain.
