HARWELL’S Ben Goodall took another huge step on his journey back from injury with a silver medal in the final qualifying event for the British Tumbling Championships.
The gymnast (pictured), who was out for more than a year with back and leg injuries, competed for Milton Keynes GC in the 17-21 elite men’s category at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
Having qualified for the championships in the first event last month, the latest competition allowed him to perform new and more difficult runs.
His first, a triple twisting double somersault, saw him lead the field.
His second run saw him perform a double straight somersault transition run with a double pike somersault to landing, the first time he has performed this in a major competition.
Carrying a higher difficulty, Goodall landed well to take a final combined score of 64.400, to miss out on the gold by a slender 0.3 marks.
He now has nearly four months back in the gym to prepare for September’s British Championships in Liverpool.
His ultimate goal for the season is to make the GB team for the World Championships, which follow in November.
