EDDIE Pepperell had a flying start and a ragged finish to his first round of 74 at the Porsche European Open.

The Abingdon golfer, playing on the European Tour for the first time in almost four weeks, started on the tenth and birdied his first three holes in Germany.

It propelled him into the top-15 and he remained high on the leaderboard despite a dropped shot at the 17th.

He was still two-under-par with four holes to play, but a double bogey at the sixth was followed by dropped shots at the seventh and ninth to finish two-over.

It left Pepperell eight shots behind leaders Julian Suri and Richard McEvoy and in need of an improvement to make the cut when his second round begins at 8.10am (BST) today.
