KINGSTON Lisle trainer Heather Main was thrilled to land her first double after 8-1 shots Rake’s Progress and Childesplay combined to score at odds of 80-1 at Newbury.

Apprentice jockey David Egan was seen to good effect on the pair.

First, he made all the running on Rake’s Progress, who relished the soft ground to beat Big Tour by two and three-quarter lengths in a mile and a quarter handicap.

The youngster then partnered the in-foal Childesplay, to a five-lengths victory on the six-year-old mare’s final start in the closing seven-furlong handicap.

Main, who took out a full licence to train at Kingston Common Farm in April 2009, said: “We only have 16 in the yard, but that’s our first double and it’s nice to do it at our home track.

“Rake’s Progress loves this ground and David Egan just set a good pace and I think he is going to want further in time. He is just a lovely horse and is really game and loves his job.”

The three-year-old was a winner for the Coxwell Partnership, which consists of Mark Telfer, who missed the victory as it was his mother’s 95th birthday, and Sir John Mactaggart, who took over Sam Thomasson’s share following his death earlier this year.

Sir John said: “It is obviously very exciting. He is the first horse I have owned and to see him run exactly to the trainer’s strategy says it all about Heather. It is wonderful.”

Andrew Knott, part-owner of Childesplay was equally delighted, saying: “She was second first time out here at 100-1 and is now in foal to Outstrip. She is a real star.”

Main made it three winners in the space of two days when Fair Selene, whom Knott also has a share in, got off the mark with a short-head verdict over Hernando Torres in a mile handicap at Chepstow under Luke Morris.

Blewbury trainer Eve Johnson Houghton continued her successful season by saddling a 59-1 double at Sandown with Silver Ghost (3-1) and Pondering (14-1).

Charlie Bishop was on board as Silver Ghost completed a hat-trick of wins with a three-length triumph in a mile and a quarter handicap.

Then Edward Greatrex took the reins to pilot Pondering to a length success in a fillies’ handicap over the same trip.

East Ilsley trainer Hughie Morrison and apprentice jockey Charlie Bennett teamed up to land a 14-1 double at Leicester with Compton Mill (4-1) and Pursuing Steed (2-1 favourite), who was completing a four-timer.

And Authorized Too followed up his Kempton win for Blewbury trainer Noel Williams by a two-mile handicap at Ffos Las in the hands of Fergus Sweeney.
