FRILFORD Heath have launched a new course aimed at making golf more accessible.

The Yellow Course is the first addition to the club’s layout for 23 years.

But it is different to Frilford’s three other courses – the six-hole set-up has a maximum length of 86 yards and has synthetic tees and greens.

With round times no more than an hour and the lower difficulty level, it is hoped the new development will appeal to a wide range of players.

To mark the official opening, the club’s European Tour professional Eddie Pepperell played an exhibition match with 100-year-old member Hugh Chamberlain.

Pepperell said: “It’s so important to make golf inclusive if we want it to remain as one of the UK’s leading sports.

“Frilford are providing opportunities not just for young kids, but also older players – Hugh hit two greens out of two, which was more than I did.

“The club are doing good things expanding the facilities and improving them. What more can you ask for?”

The idea first arose two years ago and Frilford have spent the past 12 months making it a reality.

Alistair Booth, the club’s executive chairman, said: “Beginners and younger players who might otherwise be too afraid to play a longer course because of their level of skill can now be assured that they can play a game of six holes in an hour. We want to safeguard the future of this sport and feel that in order to do so, we need to make golf available to everyone.”

l LEE Jackson won the BB&O Pro-Am by setting a course record at Winter Hill.

The North Oxford professional carded an eight-under-par 64.

Meanwhile, North Oxford has seen three holes in one in the last month.

Sandy Blight (16th), Andrew Owen (fourth) and Ian Hardy (sixth) have all had aces in competitions.
