WANTAGE trainer Henry Candy is looking forward to stepping Limato back up to a mile next season after his stable star returned to winning ways at Newmarket.

With ground conditions in his favour, the five-year-old, who had failed to score in three starts since a disappointing trip to Dubai, showed his true colours in the Group 2 Godolphin Stud And Stable Staff Awards Challenge Stakes over seven furlongs.

Sent off the 6-4 favourite, Harry Bentley’s mount readily kicked clear of his rivals for an impressive three-and-a-half-length victory over Massaat to claim the first prize of £68,052.

Candy said: “He won’t race again this year. He is now quite a big, rangy horse and he is now crying out for a mile.”

Candy and Bentley completed a 10-1 double when Chain Of Daisies (7-2) won the Join Club Godolphin Pride Stakes for the second time.

Blewbury trainer Eve Johnson Houghton clocked up her first half-century of winners in a British calendar year when Caiya (12-1) and Vixen (9-4 favourite) combined for a 41-1 double at Salisbury.

West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon provided a topically-named winner when October Storm (12-1) landed an extended two-mile handicap at York.
