WEST Ilsley trainer Mick Channon described Izzer as a “natural’ after the gambled-on son of Clodovil landed the first two-year-old race of the turf Flat season at Doncaster.

Backed down from a morning price of 14-1 into 4-1 for the Unibet Brocklesby Conditions Stakes, Charlie Bishop’s mount rallied after being headed in the five-furlong contest to prevail by three-quarters of a length.

Channon said: “That was great and to be honest, we just thought we’d throw him in because he’s been the most straightforward of our babies from day one.

“He’s handled everything we’ve asked of him and although it was soft ground, he’s kept coming back for more and has always gone on the ground at home during what has been a very sodden winter.

“I’ve not forced this lad to do anything and he’s just a natural.”

The grey colt’s victory also gave the West Ilsley handler added optimism for the rest of his juvenile cop.

“It’s certainly a boost to our confidence because he’s got a few around him that have shown us a bit as well, but at this stage of the season, he was the standout,” added Channon.

On the all-weather circuit, East Ilsley trainer Hughie Morrison sent out Dorian Gray to get off the mark at Lingfield.

Charlie Bennett made all the running on the three-year-old gelding to take a mile and a quarter apprentice handicap by a length and a half.

Sparsholt handler Harry Whittington unveiled a potentially smart newcomer when Rouge Vif made a winning debut at Ludlow.
