Jake East is the new North Oxford men’s club champion after two magnificent days of golf last weekend.

The five-handicapper, who started as a junior at the club, not only bagged the main Scratch Prize, but also won the President’s Putter for the best nett score.

East, 20, carded a gross 71 on Saturday and followed up the next day with a 68 to take both trophies.

It’s the first time he has won the club championship.

Runner-up in both competititons was Brian England – five shots behind in the scratch and three adrift in the handicap competition.

Charlie Powell finished third in both events.

The new ladies’ champion at North Oxford is Jean Simmie, who plays off a 15 handicap.

She fired rounds of 92 and 86 for a total of 178 to land her first title – three shots clear of Carolyn Sampson.

North Oxford professional Lee Jackson won Oxford City’s Pro-Am with a round of 71 in very windy conditions.

The team competition for the amateurs was won by Graham Henley’s Shaw Gibbs line-up on four under par.

There was some splendid scoring in the Chipping Norton Pro-Am with four professionals tying for first place with five-under rounds of 66.

The joint winners were Dave Stanton and Scott Marshall (both Lambourne), Luke Wiliams (Goring & Streetley) and Paul Newman (East Berks).

Chippy professional Stewart Davies and his assistant Danny Phillips both shot 71s.

The team prize was won by East Berks, but only on countback from a Chipping Norton quartet that included past captain Bob Fleming.

The Phil Garner Trophy, run by Five Star Events, will be held at Burford on Friday, June 29.
