The Grove-based Williams Formula 1 team have vowed to rebuild Bruno Senna’s in time to compete for today’s final practice for the British Grand Prix, following a nasty crash in second practice at Silverstone yesterday.

In rain-soaked conditions, Senna aquaplaned off the circuit , ploughing into a wall and damaging the front and rear wings and suspension.

The Brazilian said just after the crash: “It was quite a heavy accident but I am OK.

“There is a lot of damage to the car, but the Williams team will, I’m sure, do a great job of getting it back into shape for final practice.”

Lewis Hamilton mastered the treacherous conditions, leading the way in his McLaren, but with times relatively meaningless given the conditions, even for a Friday.

The 27-year-old, who won by 68.5 secs four years ago for arguably the greatest victory of his Formula 1 career, posted a time of 1 min 56.345secs.

Hamilton claimed to have “some fun out there”, finding the conditions “exciting”.

He said: “You are aquaplaning all the time, so you have to make sure you are in tune with your senses, more so than other times.”

The 27-year-old admitted, though, to being concerned for a record Friday crowd of around 80,000 who braved the conditions.

“There were so many great fans out there. I don’t remember seeing so many on a Friday,” added Hamilton.

Senna was 17th fastest, while Romain Grosjean, in his Enstone-prepared Lotus, did not set a time in second practice
