Berinsfield came home with two gold and two silver medals when they fought in the Haslev Box Cup in Denmark.

This was the club’s first overseas trip and was deemed a success, although only four of the eight boxers they took to Denmark managed to compete due to a lack of suitable opponents.

Both Berinsfield’s gold medallists, Michael McDonagh and Ronan Wadley received walk-overs straight into their finals.

McDonagh won his final against Danish opponent Alexander Bott, taking the verdict on all five judges’ cards thanks to superb combinations to head and body.

Wadley took only 30 seconds – including the count – to dispose of his under 15 rival Sam Pemberton, from Northside ABC, Manchester, following a powerful body shot.

Jamie Maughan won his semi-final on a unanimous verdict, but then went down to Connor Ward (Northside) in a hard-hitting close final and had to settle for silver. There was disappointment, too, for Berinsfield’s Ciaran Flanagan in his final against Dane, Andre Andersen. Despite doing most of the attacking, Flanagan suffered a points defeat against the home fighter.

l Berinsfield host the first round of the CYP Championships – formerly NABC – at their gym in Fane Drive, Berinsfield, on Saturday, October 13.

Boxing starts at about 1pm. Contact Mel Corrigan on 07860 156950 to reserve tickets, priced £10 and £5.
