THE Bolton Robots of Doom baseball team achieved a double success away at Newton Aycliffe Spartans last weekend.

The County Durham side were defeated 23-6 in the opening game thanks to some impressive pitching from Bruce Parker.

Bolton started the game superbly when centre fielder Kieran O’Leary smashed a line drive to the outfield to bring in Parker and James Newall for their first runs of the day.

Further runs were scored by O’Leary, Tony Berry, Ryan Patterson, Oli Collins and Johnny Winter leaving Newton Aycliffe 7-0 down going into the bottom of the second inning.

Newton clawed two runs back, however Bolton responded with another nine of their own as they proved too good on the day, wrapping up the win with the mercy rule in the fifth inning.

The second game between the two sides was much closer, Bolton wrapping up victory 14-6 after going the full seven innings.

The Robots steamed into a 10-1 lead with runs from Collins, Berry, Winter, Parker and Newall. The hosts attempted to revive some hope by making a late pitcher change, but the damage was already done with all the points going back to Bolton.

Bolton coach Riccardo Toniolo said: “I’m very proud of every single one of my players.”

“The guys have gone toe to toe with every opponent and given a solid account of themselves.

“They have trained hard at the Bolton Arena during the off season and it really has paid off.”
