WOODHOUSE Grange retained the Sawkill Cup after a 41-run victory over Clifton Alliance in the final at Stamford Bridge.

Sutton-on-Derwent-based Grange batted first and made a bright start at Low Catton Road, with Nick Hadfield stroking a fluent 53 off only 39 balls, with three fours and two sixes.

Man-of-the-match Hadfield enjoyed a second-wicket partnership of 76 with Chris Bilton, who scored 23, before Tom Young hit four huge sixes in his 37 off only 22 balls.

John Thornton claimed three late wickets for Clifton, but Woodhouse totalled 165-6 in 16 eight-ball overs.

The Clifton Alliance openers also started in fine form, Jason Gatus (48) and John Gilham (34) putting on 84 in ten overs for the first wicket.

They were both dismissed by Josh Jackson, and then David Suddaby worked his way through the remaining batting to take 5-25 in only three overs as Clifton were all out for 124.

The Sawkill Cup, one of the region’s major evening cup competitions, has been contested since 1952 in memory of the former Stamford Bridge captain, Doctor Sawkill.
