CALLUM O’Dowda’s confidence is “through the roof” after making his international debut, but the winger admits Oxford United’s array of attacking options may mean he is on the bench at Wycombe Wanderers today.

Despite Alex MacDonald being ruled out through suspension for the clash with the Sky Bet League Two title hopefuls, U’s boss Michael Appleton is spoilt for choice up front.

Patrick Hoban finally got off the mark against Carlisle United last weekend, but Kyle Vassell staked a claim after coming off the bench to score the winner on his debut.

Danny Hylton is the side’s top scorer, while Kemar Roofe and Danny Rose impressed in wide areas against the Cumbrians.

O’Dowda was only a late substitute last weekend after playing for Republic of Ireland Under 21s just two days earlier.

The 19-year-old has been one of United’s shining stars in recent weeks, but given the competition there will be no grumbling if he is again named on the bench.

“The standard in the team is really good,” O’Dowda said.

“Danny Rose put in an unbelievable performance from my point of view and Kemar Roofe has been brilliant, so it’ll be hard to get into the team.

“You can’t have any complaints if the boys are doing well.

“It’s a massive game. Wycombe are up there, but if we can go there and get three points it would be fantastic.

“I think we have coped well against the teams that are doing well and we’ve got the results.”

When he does step on to the Adams Park pitch, O’Dowda will not be short on self-belief.

Eye-catching displays for United this season earned a call-up for Ireland, where he was named man of the match in the 1-0 win against Andorra.

After making such strides, Kidlington’s rising star does not want the season to finish.

He said: “My confidence is through the roof and I’m looking forward to the next few games until the end of the season.

“I don’t want it to end because of the way it’s been going.”

The summer will at least give him time to learn the Irish national anthem, with O’Dowda admitting his pre-match revision had not gone well.

“I had been trying to pick up parts of it, but before the next game I’ll definitely remember it,” he said.
