Kemar Roofe was flying high after scoring twice to help Oxford United shoot down title-chasing Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 in a Good Friday thriller.

The 22-year-old West Bromwich Albion loanee’s calm finishes in the Sky Bet League Two clash at Adams Park belied the fact he had scored just once before in senior football, spanning 27 games and almost three years.

Roofe had no doubt it was the best afternoon of his career.

“Definitely, because I’ve scored in the Football League twice,” he said.

“My career so far has been stop and start, so it’s good to get a run of games.

“It was a great feeling to score in front of our own fans and celebrate with them.”

Danny Rose, United’s other scorer, hailed Oxford’s game plan for providing their best feeling of the season.

The midfielder laid on the opening goal for Roofe, who quickly returned the compliment for Rose to score as the U’s raced into a 2-0 lead.

It was an advantage they never relinquished, although the visitors needed a second goal from Roofe to clinch victory as Wycombe twice pulled goals back after the break.

Rose admitted while United have played slicker football this season, the mood afterwards had not been bettered.

And the goalscorer put it all down to Michael Appleton’s tactics, which inflicted only Wycombe’s third defeat in 23 matches.

Rose said: “We’ve had games where we’ve played better in terms of passing and keeping the ball, but sometimes it’s not a day for that.

“We had a game plan – because they hold such a high line it’s difficult to get the balls into the strikers’ feet and the only room is in behind. That was our plan and it worked.”

Appleton was thrilled to seal back-to-back victories for the first time since October.

The U’s head coach’s only minor criticism was they did not win more comfortably.

He said: “I think we should have.”
