ALEX MacDonald insists he has no regrets over joining Oxford United, despite former club Burton Albion closing in on automatic promotion.

The forward will be aiming to help the U’s beat AFC Wimbledon in a mid-table Sky Bet League Two clash in the capital tomorrow.

At the same time, 40 miles north, his former teammates will be at Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town.

Victory for the Brewers will virtually confirm their promotion and keep them on course for the title.

MacDonald, who was part of the squad which suffered play-off defeats in the last two seasons, has kept a close eye on his former teammates.

And while the 24-year-old will be delighted to see them finish the job, for him the deadline day switch in February remains the right call.

MacDonald, who signed a twoand-a-half year contract, said: “I’m still speaking to a lot of the lads up there and they’re the first result after ours I look out for.

“It will be a great achievement for them if and when they get up there – there won’t be anyone happier than me.

“Hopefully that will be Oxford United next year.

“I knew Burton were more than capable of going on and winning the division when I came here.

“It was a decision I had to make and I stand by it.

“I knew it was a big club, it was a challenge I was looking forward to and I’m still excited about it.”

MacDonald is hoping United can succeed at Kingsmeadow where Burton failed at in September.

The forward was in a side which lost 3-0 to Wimbledon, who finished with ten men.

He said: “We got a stuffing there, it was a bad game.

“It’s always a tough place to go, it’s a very small ground and the fans are right on top of you.”

Bulky striker Adebayo Akinfenwa scored twice in the game and will be one of the threats United will have to combat.

MacDonald said: “People see the size of him and think he’s there for one reason only, but when the ball comes into him he’s neat and tidy.

“He’s a handful whichever way you look at him and is a very good striker at this level.

“You don’t face someone like that very often.”
