MICHAEL Collins says Oxford United are rueing the end of the season being so close after believing they have finally found a way to succeed in Sky Bet League Two.

The U’s have struggled for consistency all campaign, but have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks.

A four-point haul over the Easter weekend means they have lost twice in the last ten games, a run which has ended any relegation concerns.

Collins thinks it is down to United being far more adept at doing the ugly side of the game than in the first half of the season.

He said: “I’ve started to see over the last four or five weeks that we’re a really good side and one that can more than compete in this division.

“It’s almost disappointing for us as a group that the season is winding down, because we feel like we’re starting to find ourselves and really kicking into gear.”

He added: “I think the key thing is we’ve found what you need in League Two, which is grinding results out in the games where you’re not always going to be able to get it down and play.

“I think we’ve found that other side to our game, which is pleasing hopefully going into next season.”

Collins stressed there has never been a lack of faith in head coach Michael Appleton’s approach.

He said: “It’s just been making sure that when they get the opportunity they go out on the pitch and deliver.

“On occasions this season, as a group, I don’t think we’ve done that, but trust in the manager has never been a problem.”
