OXFORD United sold 250 season tickets yesterday after supporters reacted enthusiastically to the club cutting prices.

It is a dramatic increase on the first day of business last year, when only 42 sales were completed.

In a poll on the Oxford Mail website, almost 80 per cent of votes rated the new prices, which also included offers aimed at encouraging young fans, as ‘brilliant’ or ‘good’.

Jeremy Faulkner, chairman of U’s supporters’ trust, OxVox, felt the move had been universally popular.

He said: “I have spoken to a lot of people on the phone and the message has been what’s not to like?

“I don’t think anyone was expecting a reduction, but it’s very welcome.

“The kids’ offers are superb – clearly they are looking at the longer term.”

Kevin Smith, who headed up the campaign as United’s director of business operations, was thrilled.

He said: “The response has been as positive as we could have hoped.

“The phones were ringing off the hook.

“The challenge now is keeping up the intensity.”
