OXFORD United are facing an injury crisis ahead of tomorrow's trip to Newport County.

Wingers Alex MacDonald and Callum O'Dowda, who both missed Saturday's 3-2 defeat to Luton Town, are unlikely to be well enough to travel.

To make matters worse, there are concerns over top scorer Kemar Roofe and key midfielder John Lundstram.

The pair are only rated as 50/50 to face Newport after sustaining ankle injuries against the Hatters.

The timing could not have been worse for head coach Michael Appleton, with just four games remaining and United's automatic promotion hopes on the line.

He said: “Macca is still struggling with tonsillitis and we think Callum has it as well. He’s seen the doctor again this morning, so it’s very unlikely.

“It doesn’t end there, Roofey and Lundstram look like they’re really struggling for tomorrow as well with ankle injuries.

“It’s come at a poor time for us."

Appleton was already without injured trio Ryan Taylor, Joe Skarz and Sam Long, while Josh Ruffels (shin) is not 100 per cent.

If Roofe and Lundstram do miss out, the head coach hinted he would look to the likes of James Roberts to fill the gap.

He said: “For some of the players who’ve not had much game time and certainly some of the young players who made a big impression on everybody last season, it might be the opportunity they have been waiting for.”
