SPECULATION is mounting that Oxford United are closing in on a deadline day deal for Motherwell winger Marvin Johnson.

The 25-year-old has been United’s top target since Callum O’Dowda was sold to Bristol City in July.

Two bids were rejected earlier this month and with Motherwell valuing him at £1m Michael Appleton felt the deal was dead.

Even as late as last night U’s boss described a successful move as “highly unlikely”, but Johnson had made it clear he wanted to leave Fir Park by handing in a transfer request on Monday.

Neither club has confirmed a bid has been accepted, but reports have gathered pace this afternoon about a transfer which would be a significant statement from United.

They have until 11pm to complete a deal.

The U's also remain hopeful of securing a loan move for a defender this evening.
