OXFORD United have made a move on transfer deadline day by signing Charlie Raglan on loan from Chesterfield.

The 23-year-old signed a deal which will keep him at the club until January.

Raglan has made three appearances for the Spireites this season, including the 1-1 draw at United on the opening day of the season.

He strengthens Michael Appleton’s defensive unit, which have been hit by injuries to Christian Ribeiro, Curtis Nelson and Joe Skarz, plus Aaron Martin away for personal reasons.

Appleton said: “He’s an experienced defender - decent size, uses the ball well but wants to defend first and foremost.

“We were looking for someone to cover us at centre-half with Curtis Nelson, Aaron Martin and Joe Skarz all struggling right now and he fits the bill perfectly.

"He will travel down tonight, train with us tomorrow and be in the squad for the home game against Rochdale on Saturday.”

Raglan came through the ranks at Port Vale, but left without making a senior appearance.

Spells in non-league with Hinckley United, Nantwich Town and FC United of Manchester followed, before he was picked up by Chesterfield in 2014.

Raglan made 48 starts for the Derbyshire club in the previous two seasons.
