OXFORD United may not have a lot to play for, but top-scorer Chris Maguire has a target to hit this season.

The striker scored his 16th goal of the campaign in a 1-1 draw at Walsall in Sky Bet League One on Saturday, his deflected effort cancelling out Andreas Makris’s opener.

The out-of-contract Maguire, who went on to reveal his United future is no closer to being decided, is enjoying the best scoring season of his career.

And the 28-year-old, who had not found the net from open play since October 1, is now looking to hit the 20-goal mark in the last four matches.

He said: “That’s the aim.

“I’m on 16 now, so a goal a game would take me up to

20.

“I’m confident, if I get the opportunity, I can do it.”

Maguire, whose previous nine goals had come from either free-kicks or the penalty spot, is now hoping for a change in fortune.

He said: “That used to be my trade scoring from open play, but it’s been a while.

“It wasn’t the best of goals, it was a bit scrappy, but if you don’t buy a ticket, you don’t win the raffle.”

Head coach Michael Appleton was also pleased to see Maguire end his barren run.

He said: “It’s important he scores from open play as well, you need that little bit of luck to kick-start again.

“He knows he has to score more goals and get in positions where he can score.

“That means getting in and around the edge of the box and I thought he did that at times.”

Maguire insists he will not let any uncertainty over his future affect the way he conducts himself.

He said: “When you start worrying about things it takes away your performance on the pitch.

“Maybe some players who are out of contract think they’ve got to impress to get a deal or catch the eye of other people.

“But as soon as you do that it’s mind games. It starts building up in your mind and you’ve just got to put that to the back.

“When you go over that white line you just have to be professional and do your job.”
