CHANGES to the Oxford United coaching set-up for next season are being considered by manager Karl Robinson this week.

When he was appointed in March, the former Charlton Athletic and MK Dons boss said all the backroom staff would be given an opportunity to impress in the closing weeks of the season.

But Robinson also made it clear he wanted to bring in one or two new members from outside the club to refresh the coaching department.

It is expected to be on the agenda this week as the planning for the 2018/19 season goes up a notch following the end of the league campaign last weekend.

The U’s manager does not envisage anyone would leave as a result, but hinted it may involve coaches taking on different roles.

Speaking before Saturday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers, he said: “There will be stuff done hopefully in the next seven days of what happens with the staff and where we move with that.

“Nobody will be leaving the building, hopefully.

“There will be a bit of a restructure internally.”

The backroom staff have been largely unchanged for three seasons, since Chris Allen was promoted from the academy set-up by then head coach Michael Appleton to the senior coaching staff.

Robinson has repeatedly praised the quality of the group working under him in the last few weeks, having taken over after Derek Fazackerley’s eight-week spell as caretaker manager.

The 66-year-old has returned to being a No 2 since then and is as hungry as ever, with no intention of retiring.

He said: “I anticipate being here, absolutely. I’m looking forward to next season.

“We’ve got some work to do over the summer obviously to try to get the recruitment right.”

One option to accommodate the extra staff would be appointing someone with specific responsibility for the under 23 side United are planning to introduce for next season.

Fazackerley said: “We’re looking to do something with an under 23 team to develop the younger players, so from that point of view there’s always opportunities.

“But we’ll just see now how the dust settles.

“We’ll talk with the club over the next few weeks and then look forward to next season.”
