KARL Robinson is confident of sealing two deals in the next 24 hours to boost Oxford United’s attacking options.

Gavin Whyte joined for an undisclosed fee on Friday and further progress has been made with loan targets.

The United boss confirmed he was hoping to sign a striker, while they are also closing in on a winger from a Premier League club.

Providing Whyte’s international clearance is received in time, hopes are high of fielding three new faces across the pre-season friendlies at Aldershot Town tomorrow night and Hungerford Town on Wednesday.

Robinson said: “It was nice to get Gavin’s deal over the line and hopefully we’ll have news on two more by Monday or Tuesday.

“We should have had a striker in on Friday.

“A club have given me their word, the agent has given me his word, I’ve spoken to the player and he’s desperate to come.

“It’s just crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s.”

He added: “Gav will run at people and I’ve got two more lined up that are similar.

“Hopefully one that will drop next week is as good as one I’ve ever had.

“I put him in that bracket because if he hits the potential I know he has, then he could be one of my best loans.

“I’ve had a few top ones, but this kid has got everything. It’s a waste he’s not playing in the Premier League, so it’s a massive chance to come here.”

The other area United are chasing reinforcements is in defensive midfield.

Michael Doughty came in on trial and played 75 minutes in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The 25-year-old, who left Peterborough United in May, did well considering it was his first appearance in pre-season.

He will train with the U’s today and Robinson is keen to have another look at the former Queens Park Rangers youngster in midweek.

He said: “This was the first game he’s played and he’s not trained. He did OK, didn’t he?

“He did better than anyone else in midfield, which says it all for the rest of them.”

The Hampton game was the second in a double-header for the U’s, with the other half of the first team beating Oxford City 5-1 earlier in the day.
