OXFORD United’s supporters’ trust have successfully renewed the Kassam Stadium’s status as an asset of community value.

OxVox were the first to use the Localism Act in 2011 to apply to a stadium, which passed in 2013.

It means if owner Firoz Kassam wants to sell the stadium, or a bid is received, he would have to inform supporters and give them a six-month moratorium so they could mount their own bid.

It set a precedent and since then, other supporter groups across the country have followed suit.

But the status only lasts five years, so OxVox had to submit a new application earlier this year, which has since been approved.

Colin Barson, who became the trust’s chairman earlier this year, said: “This is good news for United fans.

“We are committed as a trust to do everything in our power to protect the interests of the supporters and the wider community and to ensure that the Kassam Stadium continues to offer a home to the football club and an asset to the wider Oxfordshire community.”
