Wilder's warning

Oxford United manager Chris Wilder has called for calm heads, especially at home, after his team went back to the top of the league.

The U’s returned to the Blue Square Premier summit following Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Kidderminster at the Kassam Stadium, because Stevenage lost 1-0 at Tamworth.

But in-form York have closed to within a point for the top two after their 1-0 victory at Kettering.

There was disappointment in United’s camp that they couldn’t capitalise more with all three points, and Wilder admits everyone’s a bit edgy in home matches.

“I’m delighted that we’re top of the league, but know that we’ve got to be a little bit calmer at home,” he said.

“We need to pass the ball better and make more right decisions at the top of the pitch.

“While Kidderminster were dangerous, we had four or five really good chances, and one was maybe good enough to win the game.”

Recalled Jamie Cook squandered a great scoring opportunity in the first ten seconds, and then others were missed, with Jack Midson passing up two good chances, and Sam Deering and James Constable making a mess of a glorious break in the second half.

Wilder said: “We’ve got to be better at home.

“We’ve got a great home record and we’ve taken a lot of plaudits here this season, and have to take the criticism when it comes our way.

“We’re playing a little bit edgy at the moment. That’s obviously off the back of losing the one game we have done.

“We’ve got to still keep believing in ourselves and in what got us into this position. It’s all about the accumulation of points by the last game of the season at Eastbourne that puts you where you are.”

United missed back injury victim Adam Murray, but they still did most of the attacking, and just needed someone to stick the ball in the net.

The U’s boss added: “We’ve played 4-4-2 with Sam in behind, we’ve played with width, which is what everybody seems to want us to do . . . we’re just a bit edgy at the moment.

“I think that does change with a decent result, and maybe the ball hitting the back of the net in the first 20 seconds settles it down.

“The longer it goes, everybody gets edgy.

“We’ve got to make sure we overcome that, because this place is going to play a major part in us being in the position where we want to be – we’ve got the most home games left – and we can’t all of a sudden turn this into an edgy place.

“The players have got to play their part with their performances, they understand that.

“They’ve got to have the nuts to get on the ball and make decisions, and block other things out. Hopefully, when we start flowing again, we’ll be back moving forward – even though we’re top.”

Top-scorer James Constable collected his tenth yellow card of the season on Saturday, which brings him a two-match suspension and rules him out of both tomorrow night’s game at Luton, and Histon’s visit to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

I am often, no, frequently accused of being negative but there is one person in the oxford camp that is far more negative than me and that is Chris Wilder. When OU were chasing the pack last back end he was very positive as we had everything to gain and nothing to lose, now the role is reversed, we had led from August 18th and i feel the pressure has told, now we need to get things rolling again he seems confused and to play 1 up front, you cannot say Deering was a striker on saturday is to me, very negative tactics, playing not to lose as opposed to playing to win. Kiderminster were a shell of the side that put us to the sword at their place but to be honest we were woeful. We cannot afford any more days like that and CW needs to look at himself before b£ll£cking the players, i know it wasnt him that made Cook or Midson miss the best 2 chances of the game but his tactics created the tension on the pitch.

A predictable post... Thank goodness Wilder says he doesnt bother reading the "expert analysis" and lectures from some on these comments boards! Heres an idea - why don't we trust an experienced football manager who has been a breath of fresh air to this club get on with his job. His record since he got here makes me think he maybe knows what he is doing!

Well said, Another.... Don't doubt your long-standing commitment, Richard, and deep knowledge of the M6/M40 to show it - but do please stop moaning. It would have been amazing if we had not had a blip - now we are top of the league, with games in hand, and the whole thing is in our hands. Thoroughly agree that CW is just the man for the job and he has my full support and that of all those around me in South Stand Lower (though we do get nervous and go a bit quiet sometimes)

Whilst Richard Wickson does have a point, it is easy to forget how and why we got here. In view of that, I totally endorse the comments of martico1 & Another Maidenhead U. The next 3 games will be pivotal. Until then.. BELIEVE!!

I don't think anyone is having a go at Chris but anyone with a little bit of sense can see that Chris has lost his midas touch which he had before Christmas. I think what people are saying is that if we want to get back to winning ways and winning this league that we have to be far more positive tactically than we are being currently.

I do worry on Tuesday that Wilder will stick with these tactics of not wantin to lose rather than going out to win tactics and we will end up coming away with nothing from the game. We will not get promoted with long ball hit and hope rubbish and nor will we deserve too!

I must admit to being a bit confused with tactics being employed by CW. Last season and the start of this, we were playing with confidence, however time and time again when things were not quite going to plan then the manager could change things around and get a goal to win the games. However that bit of magic has deserted Chris Wilder at the moment .He seems to have lost his touch, maybe as Richard suggests, he has confused himself over team selection. Why we have to keep changing players week after week I just don't know. After Tamworth and again on Saturday, it seems that we could be regretting not getting a goal scorer in before the window closed , rather than a midfield player ( who just does not figure) another central defender and a forward who when he scored his first goal for the club, does not even get to make the bench in the following game. I am not trying to be negative, but we have to face the fact that we have not played well since November. All the changes in personnel but in my opinion the team is no stronger than what we finished last season with, apart from Clarke. Three points at Luton tomorrow is not out of the question, its three points we need to get back on track. I know we have two home games in hand, but can we expect six points from them the way we are playing.

Glad i am not the only one confused, CW has shown he is a decent guy and a good manager at this level but is only human. He confuses the players by dropping goal scorers and off-loading a popular centre back, i was never Fozzies biggest fan believing him to be a liability as regard last ditch dodgy challenges but he was part of the meanest defence in the BSP. While the team was mainly picking itself, even tho other managers said we had 2 players for every position, we were getting results. All of a sudden he changes things and we look unsteady and unable to score against more than mediocre teams, i am a fan of Chris but before he gives stick to players for being nervous (edgy) he needs to look in the mirror at the man who is most edgy of all. And while i am on by soap-box, what has happened to the pitch, it looked uneven and very bobbly on Saturday and may even be part of the reason players feel the need to keep the ball off of it, sort that out and lets get back to playing football again, we have a championship to win!

Reading all these comments are making my stomach drop like a pin. We have to go to Luton tomorrow and back the lads, we are not the manager here, we are the fans wanting OUFC to go back up but negativity can desolve any confidence that is in the squad currently. I will be there on Saturday and throughout and I will be 100% behind the lads. Until April we haven't lost anything. Keep believing. Rant over

Richard Wickson, you are rightly critisised for being negative.

Get behind the yellows.

We wanna go up, don't we?

Scare-mongerers.....

Just coz you're articulate, it makes your negativity sound well-placed but it's pure nonse.

Wilder has worked miracles and just because for the first time we don't look invincible you think he's lost the plot....

This isn't mathematics....

Yellow Heaven. :) :) ^v^ ^v^

correct statement; thats the trouble with our fans, a lot of them are expecting so so much & a lot of these fans have set ''there own standards''! we are on our day ''i think'' the best team in this league, but not by much! our big problem is other sides are raising there game against us by huge percentages, which is always gonna happen (luton are finding this out big time) and after so many seasons in this poxy league does anyone really think we're gonna walk it? of course not!...lots of supporters have very high expectancies this season & quite rightly too, but we all should realise that this brings added pressure & over the top critisisms wont help one jot! lets all just lay off our boys for once & let em do there job ! by the way WE WILL LOSE MORE GAMES but so will the others! COYY'S i fancy 3 points tonight....

Can anyone on here read? Having a go at the manager and being negative people are being accused of. If people read the comments with an actual brain they would realise no one is having a go at the manager. I know football fans aren't renowned for being intelligent but this takes the biscuit.

Everyone on here can read - otherwise they wouldn't be on here in the first place.
