Oxford United reject second bid for Constable from Bristol Rovers

Oxford United have rejected Bristol Rovers' second bid for striker James Constable.

The Pirates saw an initial offer rejected last week for United's leading scorer, but came back with an improved bid.

However, that has also been turned down by the U's.

Oxford chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "After receiving a second offer from Bristol Rovers, which was discussed over the weekend and Bank Holiday, we have decided to turn down the offer.

"The offer from Bristol Rovers was a reasonable one, but quite a bit less than what we have both rejected and accepted in the past."

You've go to feel sorry for James, not knowing if he's coming or going. Whatever happens, we've got to give Shrewsbury a chunk as well! That said, if he's not wanted (apparantly so!) let's sell him and count our losses. Above all else - let's move on. Soon. The options for new strikers are lessening each week, as we dilly dally.

Beano and any other player the club get offers for will always be considered, but in this case the club have said no. Also the Bristol chairman has said thats it for them, no more offers.

I do not think we are looking to offload Beano, but if other clubs do come in with sensible offers for him they have to be considered. Apart from Rotherham no other club (in League 2) have made many new signings, so we are not the only ones waiting for players to sign.

Jon Shaw is a target for us but Stevenage, Wycombe, York, Luton and others are also in hunt for him. I hope we can bring him in, but who would go ?

Good question. He wants to stay. I know this as a fact.

If Constable was to leave (probably not). A possible replacement would be Jon Shaw from Gateshead. Shaw has decided to leave the Tyneside club.

An interesting fact was that former Oxford player Yemi Odubabe was Shaw's striking partner at Gateshead. Shaw scored 40 goals in 67 games for Gateshead. He also has league experience with Sheffield Wednesday.

If Oxford really want to sign him, they will have to move very quickly.
