TEENAGER AJ George says it is a dream to be a part of Oxford United’s senior team alongside players he has grown up with in the youth system.

George made his third appearance and first senior start in United’s 2-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old, who has been with the club since he was nine, is one of many young players who are making an impression on head coach Michael Appleton and admitted that he is relishing the opportunity.

“I come in every day and just enjoy it and have a laugh – it’s just a dream,” said the winger.

“At the moment we have got a very talented bunch of under 21 players.

“Obviously Callum (O’Dowda) is leading the way and Robbo (James Roberts) came in last season and did well, scoring a few goals.

“We have also got Josh Ashby.

“I grew up with him and have known him since I was seven or eight and he is probably one of the most talented footballers that I have played with or against.

“And there’s obviously, me, Freddie (Grant), (Robbie) Cundy, Sam Humphreys, Aidan Hawtin, Sam Long.

“You are with your mates and doing what you enjoy 24/7 and I couldn’t ask for much more.”

George admitted his performance at Dagenham was not his best, but said he was pleased with the reaction he got from Appleton at the final whistle.

He said: “I really appreciate how he was positive about it.

“The gaffer spoke to me and said as long as I have come off the pitch knowing I could have done no more then he was happy.”
