LOANEES Jordan Evans and Chris Maguire helped steer Oxford United to their second cup win in 52 hours with a comfortable Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Yeovil Town.

Callum O'Dowda also found the net, five minutes after Wes Fogden had struck an equaliser for the Glovers.

But despite Yeovil briefly threatening, United looked the most likely to progress from the moment Evans hammered a stunning fourth-minute opener.

Maguire, who was excellent, was a fitting player to seal the victory early in the second half before a stoppage-time consolation from Shaun Jeffers.

The result, which came hot on the heels of Sunday's 1-0 win against Forest Green Rovers in the FA Cup, saw the U's into the area final for the first time.

They will face Millwall, who beat Southend United, over two legs in January.

As promised, Michael Appleton shuffled his pack - with only Chey Dunkley, Callum O'Dowda and Danny Hylton selected from Sunday's starting XI.

Those coming into the side included skipper Jake Wright after six weeks out with a back injury, while Sam Long and Josh Ruffels made first starts since August.

Evans also came into the side, in what was his maiden career start.

Within four minutes the loanee from Fulham lit up the game with a first-time shot from about 35 yards which flew past a diving Chris Weale.

It was an astonishing show of confidence for the 20-year-old to even think about letting fly, but the execution hinted at a star of the future.

Boosted by the early goal, United were quickly into their stride.

They moved the ball well and Maguire, another not involved on Sunday, wandered all over the pitch to find pockets of space.

The Scot's influence was too much for Yeovil skipper Darren Ward, who hacked the striker down with an ugly challenge on the half-hour mark.

Maguire dusted himself down to curl the free-kick just wide, before firing another effort off target within a minute.

United looked hungry, but did not worry Weale as a couple of promising moves broke down when players opted to try one more pass rather than shoot themselves.

Instead, Yeovil quietly worked their way back into the game and eight minutes before the break found an equaliser.

Neat build-up play lured Dunkley out of the back four, leaving a hole into which Fogden slipped to tuck a shot from 15 yards into the net via the post.

Stung by the goal, only the second they had conceded in five games, United promptly went up a gear.

Ruffels had been peripheral, but all of a sudden he drove down the left and swung in a cross which reached the back post.

O'Dowda steadied himself, before firing low with enough power to get through Weale and into the net to give United a half-time lead.

Within six minutes of the restart the hosts had a strong claim for a penalty turned down when Maguire tumbled under the weight of Ward's challenge as he rounded Weale.

The disappointment did not last long for the striker, who quickly made it 3-1 with a precise low shot into the far corner from 15 yards.

It was his first goal since April, but another almost arrived within minutes when he collected MacDonald's cross, only to be denied by Weale.

There was still half an hour left and for a while it looked like United would run riot.

Weale saved from the tireless Hylton and the hosts looked dangerous every time they got forward.

But with the game won and one eye on a third game in six days when Carlisle United visit in Sky Bet League Two at the weekend, the pace dropped in the closing stages.

Jeffers pulled a goal back in the final seconds, but Yeovil did not have a chance to force an unlikely penalty shoot-out.
