We deserved our luck - Lewis

MICKEY Lewis admitted it was nice to get a bit of luck in Oxford United’s 2-1 win over Northampton on Saturday, writes MARK EDWARDS.

The U’s fully deserved their victory – despite yet again seeing the woodwork deny them further goals – but there was a touch of controversy about James Constable’s opening strike.

The U’s striker confessed he thought he might have been slightly offside when he tapped in Alfie Potter’s cross, and television replays seemed to show that was the case.

But the officials gave nothing, and Lewis said that it was about time that United had the rub of the green.

However, the assistant manager said he wasn’t sure their luck had completely turned after Sean Rigg and Jake Forster-Caskey then hammered shots against bar and post respectively.

“I think we deserved it,” Lewis said.

“I couldn’t really see the first goal, but they are complaining about it and it might well have been close, but we deserve a bit of luck.

“Having said that, at one stage I didn’t think it had changed a great deal when we hit the underside of the bar and then the post.”

Lewis was full of praise for the U’s display against a Northampton side who were top of the form table coming into the game.

“They are a very good side and have been in great form,” Lewis said.

“But the desire, effort and togetherness of our players has been as good as ever in training recently, and it showed out there today.

“It’s a massive three points for us and I’m delighted for everyone.”

Constable added: “I might have been half a yard offside, but we have had nothing go our way of late.”

74 points MIGHT be enough to get above the lottery of the play offs. 4th place in 2009/10 got 73 points. So - 50 points from 26 games MIGHT suffice. 15 wins 5 draws and 6 defeats would take us to 74 . We must improve - but we can do it.

I think we probably need to get completely safe and secure from the bottom section before we start worrying about play-offs etc.
From what I have seen we appear to be in a true position in the league at the moment.
I think team/manager/chairma
n are mediocre so we are where we are for good reasons.

Agreed .However this seems a mediocre division and we might rise 15 places in 5 months
