Oxford United's boss says his side have the flexibility to succeed

Alfie Potter was given licence to roam at Bradford
CHRIS Wilder thinks Oxford United’s win at Bradford City with a changed formation proves his side are tactically flexible – a key feature if they are to mount a promotion charge.
The U’s deployed a 3-4-3 system at Valley Parade, while at the other end of the pitch, Justin Richards’s physical presence was preferred to top- scorer Tom Craddock.
One of the most assured displays of the season followed and the visitors dominated for long spells, running out 2-1 winners.
Wilder has favoured a 4-3-3 system, but for much of this season they have lined up 4-4-2 to accommodate the strike partnership of James Constable and Craddock.
The ability to use a variety of tactical shapes will be a valuable weapon as United look to continue climbing towards npower League Two’s top seven, but United’s boss feels it is nothing new.
He said: “I think we’ve always been flexible. I never understand this criticism we receive that we’re not.
“We played 4-3-3 to get us up, we played some fantastic football in the first two seasons (back in the Football League) playing it.
“Then we’ve changed and looked at personnel to go with 4-4-2, which has worked well for us.
“Against Bradford, we went with three centre halves.
“It’s not about systems, it’s about the players producing good performances and taking on board what we want to put into them.
“First and foremost, whatever shape we’re in we want to pass the ball and we did that. We opened Bradford up and made chance after chance.”
Another tweak involved wingers Sean Rigg and Alfie Potter, who at times operated on opposite sides and in narrower roles compared with their usual positions. This had a say in both United’s goals.
Rigg, normally a left-winger, equalised with a shot from a central position, while right-winger Potter earned the match-winning penalty with a surge from the left.
Rigg said: “Me and Alfie have been playing out wide and at Bradford we played inside and on the opposite side.
“You’ve got to adapt quickly, but we managed to do that and it paid off.
“When I’m out wide on the left it gives me an opportunity to cross more, but I do like to come inside and gets shots off.”
Peter Leven, who scored the U’s winner, felt it worked well.
He said: “I think the last time we did that when I played was Southend away (last season) and we battered them as well.
“We were unlucky to lose that day, but at Bradford we passed the ball really well and dominated the whole match.”
* COVERS have been laid on the Kassam Stadium pitch in a bid to help Oxford United’s game this Saturday to go ahead.
Groundstaff took the measure on Tuesday morning to protect the playing surface from freezing temperatures ahead of the clash with Rotherham United.
The condition will be monitored closely, particularly with snow expected.

We know that when Lee Holmes joined them on loan at the end of last season, he was being paid almost double the wages of our top earner. It was always going to be unsustainable. What a shame.
At the same time, we were told consistently it was us who are heading for administration by the very same people.

I'll still sit on the fence until end of season and if we go up CW can say he proved doubters wrong even though he didn't do the opposite when we limped out of play offs without a win in 7 games last season eh Chris?

You blame him that “we limped out of the playoffs” last season – yes, “limped” is the right word because the side was devastated by injuries (and it's been disrupted for most of this season, too), but you’re one of the strange people who seem to be oblivious to this. In fact in a recent post you amazingly said that you “didn’t buy the injury jinx”. Did you mean by this that you didn’t think the number of injuries in the last calendar year has been exceptional? Or did you mean you didn’t think injuries mattered, and were just an “excuse”? Either way I’d keep it to yourself, because it suggests you’ve never been involved in football. Sadly, the sum of your understanding seems to be scorelines.
I suspect there will be an absence of certain wiltshire gloaters on here for awhile and it's hard not to laugh at the irony of their jibes of late. Then again we should wait to see what happens to us at end of season before savouring the moment. Our run looks promising and I hope this will turn into a a run that sneaks us into an automatic promotion spot. One thing CW really can't take any criticism can he- he seems to have a dig at critics even when the criticism is justified. He revels in the glory of course.

Like, I bet the majority of people who demand he play 4-4-2 wouldn't even recognise a 4-4-2 when the see one, and wouldn't be able to explain what it is about 4-4-2 that would suit our squad of players better.
I continue to back Wilder, I think he's doing a good job, and his transfer dealings have been very good. He did let Bulman go, which was a big mistake - but all manager make mistakes, and he is still young and improving. Remember Fergie's signing of Taibi?
I back us to go on and reach the play offs, which I think would be a reasonable position to finish in, especially after our poor start.

Everyone's turned euphoric and Wilder is the master tactician all of a sudden. Let's hope so but we are twelfth and the momentum has to continue for some time yet

Actually reading your post convinces me your a close friend of CW and you're the secretary of his fan club. I'm happy with my football knowledge particularly compared to your blind faith approach. As for keeping it to myself I've the same right as you to post opinions.
Now go back to your obsession. If we go up CW will have done a great job if we don't he should go which will break your heart but that's football.
I'm the antithesis to your juvenile fan club attitude.

No Chris, we didn't play fantastic football with 4-3-3. We played some awful negative, boring football that sent the fans away in droves.
Now you have been forced to abandon it, we are playing some entertaining football at last. I just hope you don't get lured back into playing that way again if you want a new contract.
No you are not Pep Guardiola, Chris and Oxford United are not Barcelona.
Horses for courses I think.

There are apparently already interested parties in buying the club, and perhaps selling the club now is considered prime time as it is a successful high flyer with a successful idolized manager in L1, and the possibility Championship next season- think yourself lucky your lot isn't up for sale .. think about that one.

As much as I like to see Swindon struggling, and I couldn't help a wry smile when I heard the news, another club heading towards administration will only have a knock on effect for the rest of us. Things being what they are the Football League will introduce tighter regulations and we'll eventually head for a stage where teams can only gain promotion if they can afford it. Let's face it most of the footballing higher ups don't realise there's life outside of the Premiership so their solution will be to inflict sanction after sanction so it becomes almost impossible for clubs to compete successfully with each other.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this (and undoubtedly you will!) but surely you'd be a more attractive prospect to buyers with £9m quid wiped off your debt, so entering administration might not be a bad option all things considered?
