AND a nightingale sang in Fingringhoe Wick!

Bird spotters don’t have to go as far as London Berkeley Square to hear one of Britain’s top songsters.

In late April and early May, dozens of nightingales arrive to sing their hearts out at Essex Wildlife Trust’s reserve on South Green Road, Fingringhoe.

To encourage wildlife lovers to catch their tunes, the charity is running ‘Nightingale Walks’ every evening, 7.30pm-9.30pm, until Saturday May 11.

Dusk is the best time for nightingales, as well as other fine tunesmiths including the blackcap, whitethroat, robin and song thrush.

Warden Matt Cole said: “Fingringhoe Wick is one of the best places in the UK to hear and see nightingales.

“The nature reserve has arguably the greatest concentration of territories. Numbers at the reserve continue to rise, bucking the national trend.”

About 25 singing males had returned from wintering grounds in Africa by last weekend, and their numbers should increase to 40 or more over the coming week.
