Sir – After investigating the issue of access by car to Tower Hill Cemetery, I am pleased to be able to reassure people that parking is available for visitors without having to leave the big double car gates open at all times.

By parking in Curbridge Road or opposite the Catholic Church in Moorland Road, visitors are only a few yards from the pedestrian gate.

It is right that car access to the cemetery is limited for the sake of the peace of this special place, and to protect the verges and graves from traffic damage and unwelcome vandalism.

For those who cannot manage the short trip from these parking spaces to the cemetery the town council staff are happy to arrange to open the gates by arrangement, and have worked hard to make this possible at times convenient for those who need it.

My main concern now is the unfinished access to the new Windrush Cemetery on Oxford Hill.

We need to find a much better way to give those without cars a way to visit the graves of their loved ones.

When we visit in cars we have a difficult turn on the crest of a hill.

If we visit on foot we have a hefty hike across country or a dangerous dash across the road.

The town council is aware of the situation but please let me know of your experience, and any ideas for improving access.
