Almost ten years to the day after being appointed as Oxford United’s new manager, Ramon Diaz has landed a new job – head coach of the Paraguay national side.

The 55-year-old has signed a four-year deal and takes over from caretaker boss Victor Genes.

Argentine legend Diaz, who played for his country 22 times between 1979-1982, scoring ten times, shocked the football world when agreeing to become Oxford manager on December 9, 2004.

But Diaz spent just six months at United, quitting in May 2005 after negotiations with chairman Firoz Kassam over a new contract broke down.

  •  Latest United news:

Diaz’s son, Emiliano, who played for United during his father’s reign, has been appointed to the Paraguay backroom staff.

Meanwhile, former Oxford United midfielder Adam Murray was yesterday confirmed as Mansfield Town’s new player-manager.
