TWO brothers were jailed for a total of 15 years yesterday for violent knife raids in jewellery shops.

Temporary Judge John Horsburgh QC told George Needham, 24, and his brother James, 21, that lengthy sentences were necessary to protect the public and retailers.

George who had 20 previous convictions including five years for assault and robbery, was jailed for nine years.

James with nine previous convictions, including a seven year sentence for assault and robbery, was jailed for six years.

Glasgow High Court heard that when he committed the latest robbery, James of Broom-loan Court, Ibrox, was on the run from Dungavel Prison after escaping through the perimeter fence. He was found guilty of raiding Judy Plum's jewellery shop in Gordon Street, Glasgow city centre, on October 30 last year.

The court heard that he menaced staff with a Ghurka khukri knife and escaped with about #5000 of bangles, bracelets, necklets and rings.

He was acquitted of a charge which alleged that while acting with his brother, he robbed Stevensons the Jewellers in Byres Road, Glasgow, of #2000 worth of bangles and rings on November 2 last year.

George, also of 17 Broomloan Court, Ibrox, pleaded guilty to that raid earlier this week.
