Oxford United have made a statement about their intentions this summer by making Kemar Roofe the first signing of the close season.

And the popular forward says the actions of the club’s supporters played a big part in the decision to agree a three-year deal.

A host of clubs, including several in Sky Bet League One, were chasing a player who hit six goals in the final seven games while on loan at United.

While he was out of contract at West Bromwich Albion this summer, the move involves an undisclosed fee due to Roofe being under 24.

United

The 22-year-old was thrilled to confirm the switch and made it clear the actions of United fans was an important factor.

He said: “Yeah, because of the response they gave to me at the Newport game.

“I couldn’t get away (afterwards), which is a good thing.

“Everyone wanted to shake my hand and the love I got on Twitter as well was really good.

“It happened so quickly. It’s good to get stuff done early doors.

“The love and interest, which was shown in me from this club, was so good. It was hard to turn down.”

Roofe had been at The Hawthorns since he was a schoolboy, playing under U’s boss Michael Appleton during his time as a youth coach.

But he leaves without making an appearance for the first team.

As recently as last month he held out hope about forcing his way into Tony Pulis’s plans, but when United’s offer came in it became a straightforward decision.

“I wouldn’t say it’s difficult,” he said.

“I’ve been there a long time, but it’s business and obviously I have to start my career at some point – this is the point, it’s life I suppose.”

He added: “I wouldn’t call it a step down because this is the highest level I’ve played at. This is the best thing I’ve done in my career so far.”
