MICHAEL Appleton is confident there is much more to come from his Oxford United side after they hit back to claim a point at Luton Town.

Kemar Roofe and Patrick Hoban struck in the final ten minutes to salvage a 2-2 draw against a side well fancied to challenge for promotion.

The U’s head coach felt before the game his team had the fitness to finish the match strongly and thinks they are still some way from their best.

He said: “The good thing from my point of view is (Luton) looked like they were full throttle in the game at times.

“I think we’ve got two or three gears to go through over the period of 46 games.

“For me that’s a positive thing, but for the opposition it must be a scary one.”

It came after United conceded poor goals to Luke Wilkinson and Cameron McGeehan.

Coming a week after giving away a sloppy goal in the 1-1 draw with Crawley Town, Appleton acknowledged it was an area which needed tightening up.

He said: “We’ve got a no blame culture at the club and there’s certainly not going to be fingers pointed.

“But we have to do better in those situations, especially when you go behind.”

The draw preserved an unbeaten run which stretches back 11 games, a statistic which delights the U’s boss.

He said: “The last time we were beaten was in March – I think that says everything about the players out there.”
